AES Cryptographic Facility
Secure Edition adds FIPS-197 certified Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption for strong encrypting ZIP archives and Connect Edition Client-Server communications.
AES is a symmetric key encryption cipher, and it is generally regarded as the "gold standard" for encrypting data. AES is NIST-certified and is used by the US government for protecting "secure" data, which has led to a more general adoption of AES as the standard symmetric key cipher of choice by just about everyone.
ZIP Encryption
Most organizations focus on transmission encryption. Fact is data is more vulnerable to unauthorized exposure while stored. ZIP password encryption provides a simple means of facilitating persistent data level encryption. Persistent encryption moves with the data, guaranteeing its protection during transmission and storage. Enabling its owner to ensure its security and compliance, irrespective of external security, or lack thereof, where stored or subsequently moved.
Standard ZIP v2.0 (legacy) password encryption is known to be relatively weak, and cannot be expected to provide protection from individuals with access to a specialized password recovery tool. It is not security regulation compliant and does not take advantage of the mainframe's cryptographic hardware, making it slow and more costly. ZIP AES password encryption is just as easy to use as ZIP v2.0 encryption: all you have to do is select the encryption method and specify your password. In addition, ZIP/390's AES password encryption is regulation compliant, takes full advantage of mainframe encryption hardware to make encryption operations faster and is compatible with all other AES enabled ZIP tools (eg. WinZIP, 7-ZIP, SecureZIP, etc.)
Connect Edition Encryption
Connect Edition provides real-time secure client-server connectivity between ZIP/390 MP instances running on supported platforms (eg. z/OS, USS, z/Linux, Linux x86, MS-Windows and macOS) to facilitate high speed file transfer and cross-platform application integration operations. End-to-End AES symmetric encryption is employable to ensure secure communications.
